Contractually London cleaners may deliver their services in a variety of ways.  Therefore, it is important to vet companies / individuals to confirm they meet your precise requirements.  Listed below are the main types of house cleaning services that may be found in London:

1. London Home Cleaning Companies
These may range from sole-traders to large companies employing hundreds of people; they could also be part of a domestic cleaning franchise.  You will usually be expected to agree a written contract detailing the scope of work to be undertaken, cost of the service and the cleaning company’s terms and conditions, which should be read carefully.  If you are unsure of anything, ask them to explain.  The company will normally bring it’s own cleaning equipment and products, which are included in the cost.  The work is usually billed on the agreed scope rather than actual hours worked and you may not have the same cleaner(s) at each visit, as they sometimes work in flexible teams. The domestic cleaning company should pay the cleaners directly and be responsible for PAYE requirements.  Insurance is usually provided but the extent of cover may vary, though the bigger companies should provide liability insurance for injury / damage and fidelity insurance in case of theft.

2. London Cleaning Agencies
Essentially a Domestic Cleaning Agency works as a broker by matching domestic workers to clients looking for a regular local cleaner.  Cleaning agencies may be part of a larger domestic cleaning franchise.  You will usually be expected to agree a written contract detailing the minimum number of hours to be worked per week, cost of the service and the agency's terms and conditions, which should be read carefully.  If you are unsure of anything, ask them to explain.  Usually the Agency will be responsible for vetting cleaners, providing holiday cover and some degree of insurance, but rarely fidelity insurance in case of possible theft.  You will normally be expected to supply cleaning equipment and products. The cost of the service is invariably broken into 2 elements:
a) The fee paid to the agency, based on the cleaner's contracted weekly hours.  It is usual for the agency fee to be paid by Direct Debit or Standing Order.
b) The wages, which you pay directly to the cleaner, usually in cash.  You should also be aware that the Inland Revenue may regard you as the cleaner's employer and therefore responsible for deducting tax through PAYE, if appropriate.

3. London Private Cleaners
Private house cleaners are usually found from local advertising or perhaps recommended by a friend.  These are often informal 'cash in hand' arrangements, therefore, it is extremely unlikely that there will be a written contract or that any insurance will be provided by the cleaner.  It may be wise to check your home insurance policy to make sure you are covered for any accidents / damage caused to or by the cleaner whilst working in your home.
